Beauty and Tradition – Byzantine Art on the
Two Coasts of the Adriatic: Chioggia and Ohrid

Simpozium_Chioggia_Italia_2009_1In organization of the Cultural Organization Di Segno from Padua and in cooperation with the Veneto region and the municipality of Chioggia, between 29 April and 1 May 2009 in the San Nicolo auditorium in Chioggia, Italy was held the International Symposium “Beauty and Tradition – Byzantine Art on the Two Coast of the Adriatic: Chioggia and Ohrid ”.

This second symposium (the first one entitled “On the Origin of Fresco Painting / Adriatic-Balkan Roots of Modern Painting”was held last year in Padua) is in the framework of the M aster studies on architecture, sacral art and liturgy within the Pontifical University “Regina Apostolorum” and the European University in Rome.

Within the working sessions of the Symposium, referring to many aspects of Byzantine art, were made parallels and analysis of the mutual, mainly, architectural, iconographic and stylistic influences from the two coasts of the Adriatic . Along the numerous Italian byzantologists, historians and theologians, presentations were made by Mr. Pasko Kuzman, Director of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office who spoke on “Ohrid and the Relations with the Adriatic Cultural Circle from Prehistory to the End of the First Millennium BC”, Prof. Elizabeta Dimitrova PhD with the presentation “Adriatic-Balkan Koine : Ars Viva in Heraclea Lyncestis” and Prof. Sasho Korunovski PhD – “Ohrid: Beacon of Artistic Light at the Beginning of a New Formal Language in Architecture”. As a representative of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office, Kristina Biceva MA., Advisor on Cultural and Historical Heritage was present at the Symposium as well.

During the stay in Italy, the Macedonian delegation visited Ravenna, but also Magliano dei Marsi, Alatri and Arpino in the Aquila region in central Italy, where they held meetings with the local authorities.
