Smuggling of artifacts and icons prevented
The customs officers at the border crossing Tabanovce discovered different archaeological objects representing cultural heritage of the Republic of Macedonia in the trunk of a vehicle of a Croatian citizen. Experts from the Cultural Heritage Protection Office determined that the objects are of inestimable national value. The archaeological items were discovered on Macedonian territory and are a part of the cultural heritage of the country. The smugglers had an imposing number of 560 coins, different ornaments and jewelry.
A professional expertise was performed by Zvonimir Nikolovski, inspector for cultural heritage in the Cultural Heritage Protection Office, who informed that the jewelry dates from Iron Age i.e. 7 th -6 th century BC. There are well preserved bronze violin bow fibulas and one necklace. The coins were left uncleaned, as they were found at the site, and most probably originate from the necropolises from southern Macedonia.
In addition, at the border crossing Bogorodica, two Greek citizens were caught while trying to smuggle out two icons from the 13 th to 15 th century with the goal transport them to Germany. |
